Garden ponds
Garden ponds are a great DIY project for any budget. Water gardens
can be built for under $10 and up to a lot more if you buy all the official
parts and pieces. Pond kits are available if you just want all the parts
and then want to build a pond yourself.
For the DIYer on a budget, garden ponds can be made out of earthen
materials or recycled fliexible liners. Before digging any pond, though,
your local utility companies and zoning agencies should be contacted
to ensure you comply with building codes and permit requirements.
Garden ponds are often made of the following:
• Earthen materials – inexpensive, but vulnerable to seepage
and wild plants
• Flexible liners – you can buy one or make your own, though
this type is vulnerable to punctures and must be siphoned or pumped
to drain
• Fiberglass/rigid plastic – long-lasting and perfect for
plant-only ponds but could crack in the cold
• Concrete – expensive, but long-lasting but could crack
as it ages
