Koi fish are decorative carp, bred for their colors, and considered symbols of luck and friendship in Eastern thought. Koi usually live 30-40 years. Some have reportedly lived to be 200 years old.
Koi fish are actually just common carp. Koi can be almost any color they are bred for, though common colors include blue, red, yellow, black, cream, and white. To breeders, they possible variations are limitless.
Many named varieties of koi fish have been labeled. More than 20 named varieties have been identified. Breeders know exactly what will sell for $10 at a pet store and what can be sold for thousands from a koi breeder specialist.
