Koi ponds
Koi ponds are man-made water gardens featuring an assortment of flora
and fauna. Most water gardens are created specifically to house koi
fish. Koi are decorative carp considered symbols of luck and friendship.
Koi ponds might also have a variety of water garden plants, which grow
in three different categories: submerged, marginal, and floating. Submerged
plants have root systems and leaves completely below the surface of
the water, such as water lilies. Marginal plants include bulrushes and
cattails. Floating plants include water lettuce and mosquito ferns.
Algae are another common flora found in koi ponds. Hundreds of species
of algae can grow in a water garden. Microscopic algae float on the
surface of the water and causes pond water to appear green. Blanket
algae grow from the bottom of the pond on up and can form nigh impenetrable
walls of algae and really clog up the whole operation.
